In practically every live theatre on earth, Monday is dark night. The lobby empties, the doors lock, and the curtain stays down.

Not so for Talk Is Free Theatre’s upcoming production of Miss Caledonia.

Instead of shutting the Mady Centre down for dark night, TIFT has invited St. Peter’s Secondary School to give a one-off performance of their original play Moments of Impact.

For TIFT Artistic Producer Arkady Spivak, the idea was a no-brainer. “We have the venue, it’s paid for. We aren’t going to do a Monday night show. Why not let someone else use the space?”

Mr. Spivak was this year’s Georgian Bay District adjudicator for the Sears Festival – a province-wide showcase of high school theatre. That is where he first encountered Moments of Impact.

“It’s part of our artsLocal mandate to reach out to local groups and give them access to our resources,” Spivak says. “St. Pete’s has put together an interesting ensemble piece that was created largely by the students themselves. We’re excited to support that.”

The process behind Moments of Impact is indeed a novel one.

St. Pete’s English students went into a senior citizens residence and talked to people about critical moments in their lives. These interviews were turned into memoirs, then monologues, and finally into an original one-act play.

This is part of what attracted Arkady Spivak to team up with St. Peter’s. “It’s great to hear about these kinds of collaborations,” he says. “The more people you can involve, the more depth and life you can bring to the stage.”

You can see St. Peter’s Moments of Impact onstage at the Mady Centre Monday May 26 at 7 PM.

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased through the TIFT box office at (705)792-1949 or the Mady Centre at (705)739-4228. 50% of proceeds go to support the St. Pete’s drama program.
